My Conclusions

Depression

If you read a list of depression symptoms, and then you read a list of low testosterone symptoms, you might get the two lists mixed up. There are more similarities than there are differences.

As I reflect on 2002-2003, when I went through what I call my depression, today I have to wonder how much of this was depression, and how much was low testosterone? I suspect it was really a combination of both.

Depression can happen to anyone. It is a medical condition that can be managed or cured. A depressed person lacks interest in most activities that were once enjoyed, and lacks energy throughout the day. Most of the time, a depressed person’s is irritable. Family and friends notice signs and symptoms: changes in appetite or weight, changes in sleep patterns, restlessness or decreased activity, feeling tired and lack of concentration. Depression can affect anyone, and it can last days, weeks, or even a lifetime.

There's not a lot more to say about depression. If someone is depressed, they should get help. If someone is contemplating castration, they should have a plan to deal with the possibilities of depression.

Age related testosterone deficiency is called Andropause. Depression is a common symptom of Andropause and castration is just a way of making Andropause happen instantly. Anyway my point is, treatments that apply to Andropause would certainly be valid for a castrated man.

Certainly some type of hormone treatment would be the simplest treatment. This also has the advantage of lessening any long term health effects from having been castrated.

Avoiding depression has a lot to do with a person's attitude. Having a good partner and/or a good group of friends is important. Exercise helps by keeping your body functioning right, and nutrition plays a key role by helping keep your brain balanced.

Here's a link to a page that does a very good job of describing the vitamins needed by the brain to combat depresson, and why each is needed.
